SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY: SEAN DUNNE

Welcome to a New Year and a new Spotlight Sunday on the blog! This one is a special one indeed with our very own birdwatching enthusiast (check out our recent Insta post if you haven’t already) Head of Media, Sean Dunne. He’s here to let us know more about his passion for the job and to share some of his experiences with us all so, without further ado let’s get on with it!

1.) As it is the first blog of the New Year, do you have any personal goals for the future?

For me, I want to finally get married (after Covid delayed the initial date) and take a honeymoon somewhere exotic. But if we’re talking about the far future, I want to move down to Cornwall (I just want to be near the beach) so I can live somewhere that sells decent pasties and cakes!

2.) What does your typical day look like?

I honestly wouldn’t say I have a ‘typical day.’ Generally, it would start with a gym session before work– this really helps me to start the day off on the right foot. From there I catch up with Nic & Jodie on the day ahead and then ensure that all briefs are being answered, whilst probably spending more time than the average human on google maps planning OOH campaigns. Then it’s about making sure our digital client’s campaigns are on target and to liaise with our creative guru James for some in-house assets and upcoming projects. Throw in some calls to media owners, clients, and a few off my Mum ‘just saying hello’ – then that’s a typical day…but it never runs like clockwork…that would be boring, we don’t do boring at Edison.

3.) What is your favourite part of the job?

It’s going to sound cliché but for me, it’s the relationship with the clients. They put a lot of faith and trust into what we do for them, and when you deliver a campaign that gets them the results they want, there’s no better feeling!

4.) Can you tell us the most surprising part of your job?

I think it’s probably the diversity of it, one day I could be planning a billboard campaign, the next I’m looking at a targeted TV advert or liaising with Ed Sheeran’s manager to get his approval to use his lookalike in a clients ad. [Name drop or what!]

5.) What would you say is your biggest motivator?

My biggest motivation is to make Edison Media as successful as possible, and by doing that we have to deliver the very best for our clients. I have a 5/10/15 year life plan in my head and Edison is included all the way, and there’s no bigger motivator than aiming for success, in business, and in life.

6.) What qualities are required to be successful in your role and do you have any advice for those looking to pursue a similar career path?

Ha, I would say organisational skills, but quite frankly mine aren’t the best. It’s about mapping out clear objectives for each campaign and making sure you answer them the best you can. With us having so many formats we can utilise, it’s just about thinking outside the box whilst also ensuring you answer the clients brief. Also, don’t be afraid to give something a go! There’s no shame in asking for help, that’s how you learn. Be confident and be kind as well, the media industry is very close-knit and if you make a good name for yourself then doors will always open for you.

7.) What was your dream job when you were younger and how does it compare to your actual job?

My dream job as a kid was a footballer, I then quickly realised I was average at best! I then actually wanted to become a teacher for a while, and I think it was the satisfaction of helping others develop their skills that drew me to that profession, and I think that’s why I love what I do now, watching us help businesses develop and succeed!

8.) What makes you passionate about your job?

The results. I love that every client is different either because they’re at different stages as a business or want different results from their campaigns. Being able to work with these clients and deliver their vision is what makes me get out of bed in the morning! The other part is that no day is the same, I’m always on my toes and although it’s difficult at the moment with how the world is, it’s also exciting – we’re having to adapt and it’s making us a stronger business as a whole.

9.) Your proudest professional achievement and do you have a specific memory that stands out to you?

Again cliché, but it has to be Edison Media. It was a leap of faith to do this with both Nic & Jodie, but we’ve worked so hard to get to where we are, and it’s only the beginning. If I had to pick only one memory… it has got to be seeing Edison Media on the Manchester Screen. Our brand…on the biggest digital screen…c’mon!!

10.) Why was it important for you to help build a company like Edison Media?

To put it simply, we’ve all got each other’s backs. As a team, we go through the highs and we go through the lows together. We had all previously worked together and knew we could do things better, and not just for our clients, but for ourselves too. If you’re happy then your clients are happy, and if your clients are happy then that’s what matters.

It’s obvious to me that Sean’s persistence, tenaciousness, and clear passion for not only his profession, but for the company that he’s helped build are all key to his continuous growth and success. He’s living proof that sometimes kindness does pay off, even if he is a Chelsea fan!
