MEET TEAM EDISON – NICOLA ORRELL

MEET NICOLA ORRELL

Today we are introducing a new series on the blog where you guys will get an exclusive interview with a member of our team, here at Edison Media. This is an opportunity to get to know us a little bit better and to read all about our experiences within the industry.

The first person we will be talking to is the women herself, Edison’s Managing Director, Nicola Orrell. Luckily for us, she has agreed to share her tips and tricks from everything from starting your own business to the industry as a whole.

“WHAT’S IT LIKE RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?”
The pressure is always there because it’s not just your circumstances and family you have to think about, it’s everyone else’s too. At the same time, I don’t feel like it’s just me running it, we as a team all club together and have each other’s backs, which makes things a lot easier for me.
“WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU IN RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL MEDIA AGENCY?”

For me, it’s all about building long term relationships with our clients. It’s about being open, honest and always doing what’s best for the client, and by doing that there will always be that level of respect and trust which means we’ll continue to work together for the foreseeable future.

“WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SET UP ON YOUR OWN?”

I felt that I had so much more to give, and I wanted to put my ethos into practice (honesty, integrity, and loyalty.) I’m also at a stage in my life where I need to be there for my family more than ever and building such a supportive team means that I can be both an owner of a business and a family person, without worrying too excessively.

“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE TABLE THAT OTHER COMPANIES MAY LACK?”

I think our open and honest approach is really what sets us apart. For us, it’s all about results, and if a client doesn’t need to spend ‘X’ amount to get them, we will always advise what’s best for the client, and not what benefits our own pockets.

We’re also hugely experienced in specific sectors, fast fashion and education to name a few, so our understanding and knowledge are something clients can utilise to get the very most out of their campaign investment.

WHAT ARE YOUR KEY VALUES?”

Be honest, open & transparent. It’s all about making sure the client knows you WANT to work with them, not that you have or need to. We build relationships on the foundation of trust and respect and we go from there, we don’t want to just be someone’s planning & buying agency, we want to be an extended part of their team who they can call on whenever needed.

For me, it’s all about building long term relationships with our clients. It’s about being open, honest and always doing what’s best for the client, and by doing that there will always be that level of respect and trust which means we’ll continue to work together for the foreseeable future.

“WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO ADVERTISING?”

If we’re going to be honest, I kind of fell into it really. I love to talk; I get a buzz off doing pitches and I enjoy developing relationships with clients and knowing that we’re working together towards the same goal. It just so happens that you can do all that and also work within the most exciting industry there is, so I count myself lucky!

WHO HAVE BEEN YOUR STRONGEST INFLUENCES?

I would say lots of different family members have influenced me in different ways. For example, my husband influences me to keep going, to always believe in myself and take risks. But equally, I am impacted by lots of people who are loyal to me as loyalty means a lot in my book.

“WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ACCOMPLISHING?”

Setting up my own company and actually believing in myself. Currently, we are going through a crazy time of uncertainty, but I am proud that I made the decision now for my team, myself and my business because I know we will overcome this together.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATOR?”

Being successful but ultimately my family and especially my children. Their happiness is and will always be my main priority. I want them to always be proud of me and realise you have to always work hard.

“IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO WOMEN LOOKING TO BRANCH OUT ON THEIR OWN?”

You can do it. If you believe in yourself just the tiniest amount, build on that! It’s also really important to get the right people around you. If you get the right support network, then you can almost anything!

What we can gain from Nicola’s responses is not only an inspiring piece of advice that encourages women to have more self-belief but also a truthful depiction of what it looks like to be a business owner during this turbulent time.

I hope reading this has enabled you to get a better understanding of Edison’s core values from Nicola herself but that it has also been insightful hearing about the industry from a person who has more experience ‘than you can count on your fingers.’
